Intacs with the IntraLase for keratoconus: Six month results on 20 eyes
In addition to being surgeon- and patient-friendly, Intacs with the IntraLase (Irvine, Calif.) is as effective as the standard mechanical technique according to Yaron Rabinowitz, M.D., who presented his study at the American Academy of Ophthalmologists meeting in Chicago last month.
His purpose for conducting the study was to determine the efficacy of Intacs for keratoconus using channels made with the IntraLase. Dr. Rabinowitz used the IntraLase (Irvine, Calif.) to make channels for Intacs (Additions Technology, Sunnyvale, Calif.) insertion in 20 patients with keratoconus and followed them for a six-month period. The goal was to achieve contact lens or spectacle tolerance in patients who were previously contact lens intolerant, with visual acuity acceptable enough to avoid a corneal transplant.
At six months, 17 of 20 patients (85%) were either glasses or contact lens tolerant. One patient had Intacs removed because of an infection and two patients were contact lens intolerant. Mean change was as follows: Spherical equivalent 3.26D, uncorrected acuity 3.7 D, best corrected acuity 3.12 D, SRI 0.19 D, and SAI 0.7 D. The optimal channel size was
0.33 mm, which is 0.05 mm smaller than the Intacs diameter.
