I had my first appointment with the new contact lens specialist in the middle of February. Its amazing the difference that someone who sees KC patients all the time can make (he said he typically sees 25 to 30 KC patients a week). After hearing my history and examining my eyes he told me about a brand new hybrid contact lens (brand name Synergeyes) that he felt would work well for me. They combine the visual correction of RGP's but with the extra size and stability (and comfort) of soft lenses. They require custom ordering (took almost a month!) and I finally was fitted with them yesterday morning. The difference is phenomenal... I can now see 20/20 with both eyes and even pick off a few on 20/15. The comfort is just like a soft lens and they don't require any special break in (I wore them for 16 hrs yesterday). I'm seeing things that I haven't seen in years... suddenly working at the computer, driving, watching tv, etc is not a strain. I'm very pleased. After trying
so many different things over the years I had almost given up on seeing well again. When my initial experience with Intacs went poorly I was convinced my only option may be transplants.

Sorry for the long note but I wanted to share for anyone who may find themselves in the same situation. Find a contact lens practitioner that specializes in KC fitting. They have access and knowledge about alternative lens types and fitting regimes that the average guy doesn't. These Synergeyes seem to work great for me (they aren't cheap, about $600 for the pair) and are considerably less traumatic then a surgical procedure. Hope this info helps....
